What We Think
We live in a world that teaches us there is a fundamental difference between 'men' and 'women'; either blatantly or subtly, the message is clear - somehow our genitals define who we are!
Well, we don't agree. Not even slightly. Not only do we think that what's between your legs (nor what's inside or upon your physical person) has no true bearing on who you are, we are also with the mindset that the majority of views on gender are part of a social construct aimed to sell us stuff, keep us in line and segregate us. Have you really ever considered that gender is far more than a black and white separation between the populous? Do you ever feel restricted by your 'sex', feeling pressured to be 'something you're not'?
Before you get confused!
We believe that everyone's gender identity is personal to them. So, while we don't think that people are indefinitely born male and female (or that it determines their likes, interests, favourite colour etc) we do know that most people do consider themselves 'male' or 'female', or identify with an infinite variation of gender identities - and that's cool! We want people to be free to be their most authentic self- whatever that might mean to them!
What we want to do is to open your eyes, encourage you to challenge your own perception of gender and sex, give you as much information as possible so you can ask yourself; am I moulding myself to fit gender stereotypes? And above all we'd like to change your view on other people to accept who they are regardless of which labels they decide to place on themselves, and encourage you never to input those labels in cases where you are not invited to.
On this website we have tools for you to do just that, from our 'Resources' section - that can point you to some excellent online watching and reading; petitions that we support; and ways to find out more - to our Discussion Group where you can really get involved in the chat where we like to analyse sexism in everyday media, explore our own sexuality and gender identity in a safe environment and connect with others on the same journey as us.
So if you're investigating your own interpretation of gender, wanting to learn how you can be better equipped to handle sexism, or even if you're an academic wishing to discover different views and insights expressed through Ungendered - then we are here for you.
Welcome to our site :)
Come and Say Hi
Don't be afraid, we'd love to get to know you, so come and join us on the facebook discussion group, especially if you want to hear more from those who have spent time reading up on what gender means to them, as well as those who may be on the same path as you. Be friendly, though ;)
Please feel free to browse the media on this website, there are articles and posts that may interest you - which challenge typical views on gender and its stereotypes and also aim to open your eyes to the ways that we have been brought to think of 'men' and 'women', and hopefully help you to decide for yourself if you think those terms are strictly necessary, or deserve the impact that they currently have in the world.
