Sophie is a comics creator and activist from Montreal, Canada, who has been working on her comic, Assigned Male, for three years. Six weeks into her European tour Sophie showed up wearing a shirt that said "Nice gender, did your mum pick it out for you?", along with her vibrant pink hair and stunning smile. Throughout the evening she talked through various topics, including internet harassment, indigenous two-spirit identities, and the importance of naps.
Growing up in a French speaking environment gendered terms are everywhere and inescapable. For Sophie this added to the pressure of coming to terms with her gender identity as a young woman, and as an adult she has had to learn a new vocabulary to describe the identities and experiences of her characters. Many French speaking transactivists have adopted English terms for non-conforming identities as the French language did not have it's own. Sophie has taken a different route and created new words to describe these identities, words that have been welcomed by French-speaking non-conforming communities.
Sophie is currently working on writing an autobiographical memoir, as well as continuing her comic series and children's books.
She will still be on tour for another six weeks. To see if she's talking anywhere near you take a look at the list of tour dates.
